The Basics Of Single Pole Light Switches

A single pole switch is by far the most basic of all electrical switching. When you put the switch on the ON position, it does complete the circuit and supplies the requisite power to the device. When the switch is in the OFF position, it does disconnect all the power from the device. It is important to note that only the HOT wire is broken by the switch, this is usually the case in most houses, unless in very old houses where you switch the neutral instead of the hot wire.

The single pole switch normally has two brass terminal screws on the side that receive the white and black wires of the circuit. It is important to note that the number of terminal screws in a unit does define what type of switch it is. Modern single pole switches may also have a green grounding screw that’s used to connect to the circuit’s ground wire.

When installing the new light and switch, it is important to first determine the current for that particular circuit as this will help you determine the correct cable size for the unit. It is also highly recommended that you ensure that all the splices and devices you will be using or installing are in a UL listed electrical box. Make sure that the box is of the appropriate size. When dealing with wires, twist them together using some pliers before you put on the wire nut. Always double check at this point to ensure that the connection is not only tight, but no copper should be showing.

For termination of wires, always ensure that you use the screws. You should never be tempted to use the holes in the back of a device as a connection point. It is also worth mentioning that switches have different ratings, with some being rated 125V at 15 amps while others having much higher ampere and voltage rating. It is therefore important to ensure that you use a switch that is rated for the amperes and voltage that you are using. Always keep in mind that you should never exceed eighty percent (80%) of the ampere rating of any switch.

If the switch has to be placed outside or in wet location, it should be enclosed in a UL listed weatherproof cabinet or enclosure. Never install the switches within a wet location such as shower spots or tub unless it is installed as part of a listed shower assembly or tub. If your home has aluminum wiring, make sure you use switches which are designated CU-AL for compatibility purposes.

When choosing your light switches, it is worth mentioning that there are several types of switches in the market. These include the standard light switches, lighting dimmer switches, occupancy and motion sensing switches, timer light switches as well as central lighting control systems. The standard light switches are the most common. They are the conventional light switches which include the single pole switch, the three way switch as well as the four way switch. They are usually easy to install, are very durable and come in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes.
